Azerbaijan, Baku, Oct. 15 / Trend H. Valiyev /

Digital TV signal already covers 87 per cent of the Azerbaijani population, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry of told Trend on Monday. The ministry said this figure will increase to 98 per cent by late 2012.

At present, digital TV signals do not cover mountainous areas where the population is sparse. These areas have analogue broadcasting, but will be gradually covered by a digital TV signal.

Six more new digital television transmitters will be installed in the country in the near future. The equipment is expected to be delivered within the next four to five months.

Analogue broadcasting will be discontinued after the country fully moves over to digital broadcasting. According to the ministry's work plan, this will take place in 2013.

The digital content is broadcast in the MPEG-4 format. Subscribers must purchase a decoder prior to receiving digital broadcasting.
