Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 26

By Huseyn Valiyev - Trend:

Work on creating optical cable infrastructure in Azerbaijani capital of Baku has wrapped up, the Deputy Communications and High Technologies Minister of Azerbaijan Iltimas Mammadov said Sept. 25.

He said the lines were laid in the direction of the facilities, which are to host the Baku 2015 First European Games, as well as other venues related to the event.

Mammadov noted that at present the work is underway to test and verify the quality of the optical cable infrastructure, adding that the total length of the optical line will be 230 kilometers, and the copper cabling infrastructure will be about 70 kilometers long.

Data transfer speed via the infrastructure will range from 1 gigabit per second to 10 gigabits per second, the deputy minister said.

"The work entrusted to the ministry with regard to holding the First European Games in Baku, will be completed by February 2015," he said.

"The works include developing Wi-Fi networks, providing stable and high-quality communication for facilities that will host competitions, and other venues associated with the games, creating alternative lines using wireless technologies and resources of Azerbaijani satellite Azerspace-1, and ensuring security of internet resources and operator networks," Mammadov said.

The works also envisage introducing the Integrated Services for Digital Network (ISDN), expanding internet access infrastructure, and deploying free Wi-Fi networks in public areas (parks, stadiums, shopping centers).

It is also planned to establish a quality and sustainable infrastructure for broadcasting (including the broadcasting in the high-definition).

Baku 2015 is the first ever European games, an exciting and innovative multi-sport event for the continent which will take place from June 12 to June 28, 2015.

There will be a total of 20 sports at Baku 2015: 16 Olympic sports and four non-Olympic sports.

More than 6,000 athletes from across Europe will be representing their nations over 17 days of competition.

Baku was awarded the games by the European Olympic Committees (EOC) in December 2012.
