Azerbaijan prepares for selection of company to launch second satellite

The Azercosmos JSC of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan prepares to select a company that will launch the second telecommunications satellite Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 into orbit, the company told Trend.

Azerspace/Africasat-1a was launched into the orbit from the ELA-3 launch complex of the Guiana Space Centre on February 8, 2013 on the Ariane 5 ECA carrier rocket of the French company, Arianespace.

The selection of the company that will build a carrier rocket within the framework of the second satellite program will also be carried out on a tender basis.

Earlier, four companies (International Launch Services Inc., Arianespace, SpaceX and Ukroboronservis) participated in the tender for the launch of the first satellite.

Regarding the insurance of the Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38 satellite, this issue will be resolved by the time of launching Azerspace-2/Intelsat 38, that is, in 2017, said the company.

The satellite will be located at the 45 degrees east orbital location leased by the Azerbaijani side from the International Telecommunications Satellite Organization Intelsat that is the leaseholder of 45.9 percent of the satellite's resources. The service area of Azerspace-2 will cover Europe, South-East Asia, Middle East and Africa.
