By Maksim Tsurkov - Trend:

Azerbaijan Railways CJSC transported nearly 17 million tons of cargo in 2015, chairman of the CJSC Javid Gurbanov told reporters Dec.30.

He said that the year 2015 was quite difficult for the company, however, the current problems will be gradually solved.

"In 2015, the railway transported about 17 million tons of cargo," said Gurbanov. "This volume was slightly reduced, but the reduction was due to domestic transportation. International transit transportation, in contrast, is growing."

"Today, there is a 10 percent increase in the volume of cargo transportation from Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan, as well as transit transportation through the territory of Azerbaijan," he said.

Gurbanov went on to add that the third container train of the Trans-Caspian route has already arrived in Batumi.
"The route of this train began in South Korea, and in just eight days, the train arrived in Tbilisi," Gurbanov said. "In 2014, container transportation worth more than $250 billion was implemented from China to Europe, which is a very large flow of goods."

"We are working hard to bring this flow of cargo through the territory of Azerbaijan and the Georgian ports of Poti and Batumi to the Black Sea ports of Varna, Odessa, Constanta, as well as to Turkey using Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway," he said.
