The North-South transport corridor project is acquiring particular importance today, Vladimir Yakunin, former head of Russian Railways JSC, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Foundation of St. Andrew the First-Called, told Trend Apr. 25.

"When we started this project in the Russian Transport Ministry together with Azerbaijan, we didn't even fully understand the importance of this project," he said.

The North-South corridor is meant to connect Northern Europe with South-Eastern Asia. It will serve as a link to connect the railways of Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia. At the initial stage, it is planned to transport 6 million tons of cargo per year via the North-South corridor and further to increase this volume to 15-20 million tons.

Yakunin noted that the North-South project is becoming increasingly important today in the prospect of the development of international trade, international relations.

"I think that the countries, which are involved in this project, including Azerbaijan, should develop and promote this project," he added.
