Amec Foster Wheeler has been awarded a front-end engineering design (FEED) contract to modernize the Heydar Aliyev Oil Refinery in Baku, Azerbaijan, according to the message of the company posted Apr. 26 on its website.

The contract, awarded by the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR), is part of a major investment to increase the refinery's capacity and improve the quality of the fuel produced.

Amec Foster Wheeler in alliance with SOCAR Foster Wheeler Engineering will finalize the work in the first quarter of 2017.

The process of modernization of the refinery will be completed by 2020.

Following the reconstruction, the refinery's processing capacity will increase from 6 million to 7.5 million tons of oil per year.

SOCAR announced about liquidation of Azneftyag oil refinery on Jan. 1, 2015 and its merger with the Heydar Aliyev Baku Oil Refinery.

This decision was made as part of work to improve and optimize SOCAR's structure.

In total, some 5.45 million tons of oil products were produced in Azerbaijan in 2015, compared to 5.31 million tons in 2014.
