The ceasefire was violated on the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops in different positions 50 times yesterday, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said today.

Armenian armed forces opened fire at positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces located in the nameless heights in the Tovuz region from positions located in the village of Aygepar in Armenia's Berd region last night.

From positions located in the village of Berkaber, Vazashen in Armenia's Ijevan region, Armenian armed forces opened fire at positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces located in the village of Qizilhajili and the nameless heights in the Gazakh region.

From positions located in the village of Shavarshavan in Armenia's Noyemberyan region, Armenian armed forces opened fire at positions of the Azerbaijani armed forces located in the village of Farakhli in the Gazakh region.

Azerbaijani Armed Forces were fired on from positions located near the villages of Goradiz, Garakhanbeyli, Gorgan, Ashagi Veysalli, Ashagi Seidahmadli, Ashagi Abdurrahmanli in the Fizuli region, Marzili, Yusifjanli in the Agdam region, Chilaburt, Chayli in the Terter region, Tapgaragoyunlu in the Goranboy region, Mehdili in the Jabrail region and at the nameless heights in the territory of the Khojavand region.

The shooting was countered by return fire. No one was killed.

The situation on the frontline remains tense.

Most ceasefire violations are being observed in the Fizuli, Agdam, Terter, Goranboy, Khojavand, Jabrail regions, spokesman for the Defense Ministry, Lieutenant-Colonel Vagif Dargahli told Trend earlier.

Dargahli stressed that the number of ceasefire violations has recently increased. This means there have been over 1,500 incidents since Jan. 21.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
