Armenian armed forces violate ceasefire

Baku, Azerbaijan, March 29

By Sabina Ahmadova - Trend:

Armenia's armed forces have once again violated ceasefire.

Armed forces of Armenia opened fire at Azerbaijani armed forces positions located in the Gizilhajili village of Azerbaijan's Gazakh district from the positions in the Berkaber village of Armenia's Ijevan district, yesterday and last night, according to a message from the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry.

Armenian armed units also opened fire at Azerbaijani armed forces positions located on the nameless heights in the Alibayli and Kokhanabi villages of Azerbaijani Tovuz district from the positions on the nameless heights in Mosesgeh and Aygepar villages of Armenia's Berd district.

Azerbaijani armed forces' positions were also subjected to fire by Armenian armed units from the positions located near the Garakhanbayli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Abdurrahmanli villages of Fizuli district, Merzili, Kangarli, Bash Garvand of Aghdam district and Kuropatkino village of Khojavend district, and from the nameless heights in the Goranboy district.

The shooting was countered by return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
