The ceasefire on the Armenian-Azerbaijani contact line was broken 16 times by the Armenian armed forces during the last 24 hours, Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Aug.12.
Armenian armed forces, located at the nameless heights and in the village of Jil of Armenia's Krasnoselsk region, fired at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces, located at the nameless heights of the Gadabay region.
Moreover, Azerbaijani positions underwent fire from the positions located in the villages of Merzili, Yusifjanli, Sarijali, Kengerli of the Aghdam region, Qarakhanbayli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli of the Fizuli region, Geyarkh of the Terter region, Tapgaragoyunlu of the Goranboy region.
The opposing side was silenced with return fire.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.
As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented four U.N. Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
