By Seba Aghayeva - Trend:

The self-proclaimed Nagorno-Karabakh regime has no legal basis to hold trial of Azerbaijani citizens, according to a statement from Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry.

The issued statement came following the Armenian media reports about holding a trial of the Azerbaijani citizens Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov, who were earlier taken hostage by the Armenian side.

The ministry noted that the decisions made by a court of the illegal regime, will not have any legal force.

"Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov, who visited the graves of their relatives, were taken hostage, tortured during an illegal investigation, and Hasan Hasanov was brutally murdered by the Armenian military," the ministry said.

"Such actions of Armenia directly contradict international humanitarian law and the Geneva Convention," said the ministry.

The ministry's statement said that free movement of Azerbaijani citizens on the country's territory can't be prohibited or restricted except for certain cases outlined in Azerbaijan's legislation.

The statement said the so-called "Nagorno-Karabakh regime" was created on Azerbaijan's occupied lands to conceal the occupation of Azerbaijani territories by Armenia.

"By occupying Azerbaijani lands, Armenia grossly violated international norms and principles, the UN Charter and the Helsinki Final Act, for which it must be held accountable," the statement said.

Azerbaijan continues to work with international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), and the OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs for the release of Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov.

Armenian media reported previously that Shahbaz Guliyev and Dilgam Asgarov were taken hostage in Azerbaijani Kalbajar district's Shaplan village on July 11. Hasan Hasanov was shot dead by the Armenian side.
