MasterCard corrects mistake related to Azerbaijan after appeal

Baku, Azerbaijan, Oct.31
By Azad Hasanli - Trend:

MasterCard Worldwide international payment system has eliminated the error on its official website, after Azerbaijan issued an appeal to the company, the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA) told Trend on Oct.31.

On MasterCard's official website Azerbaijan's occupied lands were shown as Armenian territories.

MasterCard eliminated this error on Oct.31 after the appeal of the CBA.

Previously, by searching ATM Locator on MasterCard's website, one could find "Stepanakert" (Khankendi), "Shusha" and other names of Azerbaijan's occupied territories in the "Armenia" section.

CBA first revealed the mistake in early 2014, after which it expressed serious pretension to the management of MasterCard. The company responded with eliminating the error.

CBA said the error re-appeared on the website due to technical issues, and it was eliminated after another appeal. The bank added that it closely monitors illegal financial transactions carried out on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh.

"Some companies, engaged in remittance in Azerbaijan have been revealed to operate in Nagorno-Karabakh without permission of the CBA over the last few years, and their activities were suspended there," CBA said.

Meanwhile, the Central Bank appealed to VISA Inc and MasterCard Worldwide payment systems demanding to keep this issue under control.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
