Over the past 24 hours, the Armenian armed forces 52 times violated the ceasefire on various parts of the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan said Dec. 18.

On that day, Armenian armed forces located in the village of Mosesgeh of Armenia's Berd district, opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces in the village of Alibayli in the Tovuz district.

Armenian armed forces located in the village of Berkaber and Paravakar of Armenia's Ijavan district, opened fire at the positions of Azerbaijani armed forces in the village of Gizilhajili in the Gazakh district and Kehneqishlaq of the Aqstafa district.

Armenian armed forces opened fire at the Azerbaijani positions located near the villages of Yusifjanli, Shikhlar, Sarijali, Marzili of the Aghdam district, Kuropatkino of the Khojavand district, Horadiz, Gorgan, Garakhanbayli, Ashagi Seyidahmadli, Ashagi Veysalli of the Fizuli district and Qekarkh, Chayli, Chilyaburt of the Tartar district.

The Azerbaijani armed forces were fired at from the nameless heights in the districts of Fuzuli, Goranboy and Khojavand.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
