Over the past 24 hours, Armenia's armed forces 49 times violated ceasefire on various parts of the contact line of Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Defense Ministry of Azerbaijan said Dec. 31.

Armenian military, stationed in the villages of Chinari and Aygepar of Armenia's Berd district, opened fire on Azerbaijani armed forces' positions in the villages of Aghbulag and Alibayli in Tovuz district.

Azerbaijani military's positions were also fired at from positions near the villages of Goyarkh, Chileburt of Tartar district, the villages of Yusifjanly, Marz, Sarijali, Javahirli, Kangarli, Garagshli and Bash Gerveng of Aghdam district, Kuropatkino village of Khojavand district, the villages of Horadiz, Garakhanbeyli, Gorgan, Ashagi Seyidahmadli and Ashagi Abdulrahmanli of Fizuli district, and the village Mehdili of Jabrail district.

Aside from that, Azerbaijani military's positions came under fire from the positions on nameless heights in Goygol, Goranboy, Khojavand, Fuzuli and Jabrail districts.

The opposing side was silenced with return fire.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
