Strengthening of the armed forces is one of Azerbaijan's priorities, Azerbaijani Defense Minister Zakir Hasanov said.

He was addressing the personnel at the opening ceremony of a military unit with modern equipment in the front area, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Feb. 28.

The military unit was established in accordance with Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan, President Ilham Aliyev's decree.

Hasanov said that as a result of the president's attention and care, the military and moral-psychological training, material-technical base have been recently strengthened.

"The social conditions of the personnel have been improved," he said. "The third military unit has opened for the last three months. A few more units are planned to open this year."

"The country's army is provided with modern weapons and equipment," the minister said. "The new military camps are commissioned. The personnel apartments are built and commissioned. All this is the result of attention and care rendered by the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces of Azerbaijan."

He said that that the most painful problem for Azerbaijan is the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"Much work is conducted to fairly resolve this conflict," Hasanov said. "The armed forces must be strong for the Azerbaijani people not to face such a tragedy again."

"By strengthening the armed forces, a day of the liberation of our lands from occupation is not so far," the minister said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan.

As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
