Azerbaijani Society of America (ASA) said March 29 the General Assembly of the US State of New Jersey issued a resolution recognizing March 31, 2015 as the Azerbaijani Remembrance Day marking the solemn 97th anniversary of the Azerbaijani Genocide.

The resolution introduced by NJ Assemblywoman Sheila Y. Oliver was signed by the Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto with the official copy presented to ASA leadership.

In 2012, also through ASA Pax Turcica powered awareness efforts, New York became the first state outside of Azerbaijan to legislatively acknowledge Azerbaijani Genocide as a historical fact, when NY State Senate adopted Resolution J3784. New Jersey issued a similar legislative recognition in 2013; Azerbaijani Genocide has also been recognized by individual official proclamations in the states of Texas and Nevada.

The policy of genocide and deportation carried out by the Armenians against Azerbaijanis, eve more intensified in 1918-20.

The genocide was committed on March 31, 1918, when hundreds of towns and villages of Azerbaijan were destroyed, as well as 150 Azerbaijani villages in Karabakh were turned into ruins, an unprecedented bloodshed in Shusha was committed.

More than 700,000 Azerbaijanis, including 30,000 persons in Baku and in surrounding villages were brutally murdered, mosques and schools were burned.
