Paraguay recognizes Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity

Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept.22

Trend:

The Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Paraguay's National Congress has adopted a declaration recognizing Azerbaijan's sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said Sept.22.

The declaration adopted Sept.10 at the plenary meeting of the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay's National Congress, once again confirmed that Nagorno-Karabakh is the integral part of Azerbaijan.

Moreover, the document highlighted that Azerbaijan's territories have been occupied by Armenia and as a result of the military operations carried out by this country's armed forces, thousands of people were killed, many were captured, missing and became internally displaced persons.

The respect for Azerbaijan's sovereignty, territorial integrity and internationally recognized borders has been expressed in the declaration of the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay's National Congress.

The document urges to settle the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in line with the resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 of the UN Security Council and relevant documents of the UN General Assembly.

The document also said that the Chamber of Deputies of Paraguay's National Congress, adopting this declaration, shares the pain of the people who have fallen victim to the conflict.

Paraguayan MPs consider the coexistence of people in peace and respect for human rights as important, just as it is enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
