The OSCE Minsk Group on resolving the Armenian-Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh conflict can hold talks this autumn, RIA Novosti reported citing OSCE Secretary General Lamberto Zannier.

He made the remarks addressing the Council of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Moscow, Russia.

A meeting between Azerbaijani and Armenian presidents is not ruled out either, according to the OSCE secretary general.

Furthermore, Zannier said he discussed the Nagorno-Karabakh problem with CSTO Secretary General Nikolay Bordyuzha.

He expressed concern over the increase of tension in the region and on the Azerbaijani-Armenian border and emphasized the necessity of working with the political leadership.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
