Assessment of damage inflicted to Azerbaijan as a result of Armenian aggression significantly strengthens Azerbaijan's position in talks on settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, said Elman Pashayev, sector head at the Public and Political Issues Department of Presidential Administration.
He made the remarks Nov. 18 during presentation of a report of a working group for assessment of damage inflicted to Azerbaijan as a result of the Armenian aggression.
Pashayev said the holding of this assessment and presentation of substantial facts reinforce Azerbaijan's arguments within international organizations.
He added that this also creates conditions for state officials and representatives of NGOs in the country to more securely protect Azerbaijan's fair position.
Total amount of the material damage inflicted to Azerbaijan as a result of the Armenian aggression stands at $818.88 billion.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
