Trend:

Armenia will put an end to the OSCE Minsk Group process by recognizing the so-called regime in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, said Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, May 3.

Earlier, two Armenian MPs proposed that country's government to recognize the "independence" of the occupied Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan.

"In case of such recognition the OSCE Minsk Group will be deprived of its mandate," said Hajiyev. "This is a striking example of abuse and arbitrary treatment of the Minsk Group process, its co-chairs and international community."

"International community must adequately respond to these provocative actions of Armenia," added Hajiyev.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
