Armenia’s armed forces have 14 times violated the ceasefire on the line of contact between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops over the past 24 hours, said Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry Aug. 12.
The Armenian army was using large-caliber machine guns and sniper rifles.
The Armenian armed forces stationed on nameless heights and in the Paravakar and Berkaber villages of Ijevan district and in the Berdavan and Barekamavan villages of Noyemberyan district of Armenia opened fire at the Azerbaijani positions located in the Gizilhajili, Kemerli, Gaymagli villages and on nameless heights of the Gazakh district.
Positions of the Azerbaijani army also underwent fire from the Armenian positions located near the Marzili village of the Aghdam district, the Kuropatkino village of the Khojavand district and from nameless heights of the Jabrayil district.
The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.
The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
