Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov will meet with OSCE Minsk Group co-chairs on Sept. 21, Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Hikmat Hajiyev has told Trend.

The meeting will be held during the 71st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

The Minsk Group, the activities of which have become known as the Minsk Process, spearheads OSCE's efforts to find a peaceful solution to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. It is co-chaired by France, the Russian Federation, and the United States.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
