Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry in a statement released Jan. 13 expressed its regret and discontent regarding the fact that the teams representing the illegal regime of Nagorno-Karabakh established by Armenia in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan were invited to the 28th International Club of the Funny and Inventive People (KVN) Festival taking place Jan. 10-23, 2016 in the city of Sochi.

The public of Azerbaijan, the numerous KVN fans protest this invitation, perceiving it as a provocative and biased move, the statement said.

Inviting these teams to the festival serves the purpose of politicization of the KVN, and does not comply with the club’s goals and objectives, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry noted.

Such action is also contrary to the spirit of strategic partnership relations between Azerbaijan and Russia, the statement said.

The international community recognizes Nagorno-Karabakh region as an inalienable part of Azerbaijan and supports the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry said.

KVN International Union and AMIK Television Creative Association by allowing the participation of the teams representing the illegal regime of Nagorno-Karabakh in 28th International KVN Festival demonstrates non-friendly attitude to Azerbaijan and supports violation of the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country, the statement noted.

These actions serve the propaganda of Armenia’s aggression, separatism and the illegal regime established as a result of Armenia’s occupation of Azerbaijani territories, the country’s Foreign Ministry said.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
