Russia, which is a friendly country and a strategic partner of Azerbaijan, has great opportunities to influence the settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, Bahar Muradova, deputy speaker of the Azerbaijani parliament, told reporters in Baku Jan. 19.

Muradova was commenting on Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s statement about the possibilities of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict’s settlement.

“Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has already expressed the position on that issue,” Muradova said, adding that she fully shares that position.

"Azerbaijan expects more effective actions to resolve the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict," Muradova said.

Earlier, Lavrov said at a press-conference that the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is not an internal affair of Azerbaijan.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
