Trend:

The Armenian armed forces once again attempted a provocation on the line of contact of the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops in the direction of Azerbaijan’s Talish village, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said in a message Feb. 27.

"The Armenian armed forces continue to take actions to escalate the situation on the line of contact,” the message said, adding that the attempt was detected and prevented by the Azerbaijani side.

The message further said that as a result of shootout, Armenian side suffered losses, and was forced to retreat. The opposing side suffered no losses.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts. The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
