A positive solution to the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorno-Karabakh conflict is already close, said Ukrainian scholar Artur Aghajanov.

He was addressing a conference titled “The Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict: Origins, Peacemaking and the Role of Civil Society” in Baku March 14.

Aghajanov noted that the most important thing is to have faith in the settlement of the conflict.

“I am an Armenian born in Baku,” he said, adding a number of his Armenian acquaintances share his opinion on the conflict’s settlement, but fear to state it openly.

“They have positive approach to the conflict resolution,” he explained.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The 1994 ceasefire agreement was followed by peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented four UN Security Council resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
