Persons involved in smuggling and drug trafficking were exposed in Azerbaijan, the Center for Public Relations at the Ministry of National Security told Trend on Thursday.

A total of over 20 kilograms of narcotics were seized.

A group of Azerbaijani citizens, by preliminary agreement secretly smuggled large quantities of drugs through customs control from Russia to Azerbaijan for sale.

It was ascertained that these citizens bought 125.46 grams of cocaine and 72.83 grams of methadone in Moscow. Members of this group hid drugs inside a DVD-player and secretly smuggled them to Azerbaijan through Samur customs point in an Ikarus bus operating on a Moscow-Baku-Moscow run. The group was detained in Baku.

As a result of other operation conducted by the Ministry of National Security, another Azerbaijani citizen Dovlat Maharramov was detained.

It was ascertained that Dovlat Maharramov, and Iranian citizen Shahram, whose identity is currently being determined, smuggled a large quantity of narcotics from Iran to Azerbaijan.

Iranian citizen Shahram smuggled a large amount of drugs across the border and hid them in an agreed location in the village Telmo of the Astara region. Dovlet Maharramov was arrested at the scene by employees of National Security Ministry while trying to take a package with drugs from the pre-agreed place. Some 19 kilograms 278.71 grams of hashish were found in the package.

Criminal cases were initiated against both under articles 206.3.2 (drug trafficking by a group of persons under preliminary agreement), 234.4.1 and 234.4.3 (acquisition, transportation, storage and sale of large amounts of drugs by group of persons by preliminary agreement).

Operational and investigative activities are held on the cases.
