An explosion at a chemical plant in central Japan on Thursday killed five workers and injured 11, broadcaster NHK said.

The workers were scrapping a heat exchanger at the plant, NHK reported, citing officials at Mitsubishi Materials Corp, which runs the factory, dpa reported.

The explosion destroyed part of the plant in Yokkaichi city, 280 kilometres west of Tokyo, but the fire was contained, the report said.
