Baku, Azerbaijan, June 11

The employees of Turkey's consulate in Iraq's Mosul city couldn't leave it, Turkish Milliyet newspaper quoted the Mosul governor Aseel al-Najafi as saying on June 11.

The militants of the group known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have taken the control of the city of Mosul.

The diplomats had to open the doors of the consulate after the militant groups threatened to blow up its building, according to the newspaper.

Turkey's Foreign Ministry hasn't confirmed the incident yet.

It was earlier reported that the militants of the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant group, took control of Mosul - the second most populous city in Iraq.

The situation in northern Iraq sharply escalated last week. Nearly 60 people were killed as a result of numerous clashes between the Iraqi security forces and militants near the city of Mosul.

The 'Islamic state' controlled the western part of Mosul in recent days. It attacked and captured the governor's residence building on June 9.
