A magnitude-7.1 earthquake on the Pacific Coast has jolted a wide area of southern Mexico and Central America, AP reported.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 6:23 a.m. (7:23 a.m. EDT; 11:23 GMT) on the Pacific Coast 5 miles (8 kilometers) northeast of Puerto Madero, near the Guatemala border.

In Mexico City, buildings and light posts swayed and local news media reported the quake was felt strongly in the Mexican states of Chiapas and Tabasco. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, though there were power failures in the western part of Guatemala.

The quake was centered 57 miles (92.2 kilometers) below the surface.
