Party leader: Azerbaijani opposition is selfish

Azerbaijan, Baku, July 12 / Trend T.Hajiyev /

The Azerbaijani opposition is selfish, as it considers only itself a real, Azadlig Party Leader Ahmad Oruj told Trend today.

"The parties separately state that they are the real opposition and that the other party is weaker. We think this is a selfish approach. Today, the ranks of our opposition are not so wide. Such statements further weaken the opposition," Oruj said.

Mainly the party's functionaries made such statements, he added.

"Such statements mainly made by the functionaries of the party's such as Musavat and Popular Front Party. Musavat Leader Isa Gambar's position towers cooperation with the Union for Democracy is aimed at establishing a wider range of real and genuine opposition. People's Front Leader Ali Kerimli also makes statements in this regard from time to time. But, some from deputies and functionaries voice self-serving statements," Oruj said.

Orudj touched the issues of integration within the opposition.

"There are many offers of cooperation. The Union has announced its readiness to negotiate on this issue and cooperate within the opposition. We had a proposal to negotiate within the Union, Musavat and Azadlig," Oruj said. "There are some difficulties in connection with the situation inside the Azadlig party.  In any case, we believe it possible for us to cooperate with all political forces and desire it," he added.

Union for Democracy was founded by the opposition Classic Popular Front Party, Azadlig party and National Democracy Party after 2005 parliamentary election. Great Azerbaijan Party joined the union in early Sept. 2008 and People's Party - in Nov. The Union is advisory and cooperation body. In October 2009, the National Democratic Party was excluded from the Union, then it was decided to join National Salvation Party.
