The Azerbaijani Embassy in Kazakhstan has drafted a project on erection of a monument to 44 Azerbaijani women killed in the Akmolinsk Camp for Wives of Traitors to the Motherland (ALZHIR) in Kazakhstan, Azerbaijani Ambassador to Kazakhstan Zakir Hashimov has told Trend.

"The work is underway to erect a monument. It is planned to install it on the Day of Memory of Political Repression Victims -May 31, 2011, which is annually celebrated in Kazakhstan," he said.

A museum was established on the site of the ALZHIR camp. 44 Azerbaijani women, who were deported to Kazakhstan from Azerbaijan upon denunciations in the years of political repression in 1937-38, were murdered in the ALZHIR.

Hashimov said the embassy sent requests to the State Archives of the two countries to find relatives of those Azerbaijani women.

A monument was erected in 2008 in the former Karagandinsk camp for political prisoners (KarLag) in the memory of Azerbaijani victims of Stalin Repression sent on exile to Kazakhstan.

There is information that one of the Azerbaijani women prisoners of ALZHIR suckled Kazakh baby after her baby's death. This fact made history and is reflected in the performance of the Astana Theater.

The Astana theater named after Kulyash Baiseitova last year premiered a new play " ALZHIR azasi" ("Alarm of ALZHIR"). The tragi-farce play tells about the terrible ordeals of the women prisoners.

Women of more than 60 nationalities were kept in the ALZHIR. In 1938, there were about 8,000 women prisoners, including 4,500 family members of traitors. More 1,500 families of traitors were in other centers of KarLag.
