Azerbaijani ambassador to Canada Farid Shafiyev on Friday took part as a keynote speaker at a banquet held by the Association of Progressive Muslims of Ontario at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto, a statement by Azerbaijani Embassy in Canada says.

During his speech Shafiyev touched on relationship between Islamic and Western worlds, and noted with regret that the Islamophobia is rising in some Western countries. Shafiyev said that in Azerbaijan, which is a secular state with more than 90% of its population comprised of Muslims, there are several synagogues and churches and this is normally perceived by the public. The Ambassador noted that despite Azerbaijan has been subjected to aggression, and the destruction of mosques in its occupied territories, the attitude to Christianity and other religions in the country is tolerant.

At the event Shafiev has received an award.

Shafiev has also given an interview to local radio's John Tory Show, where he spoke of religious tolerance in Azerbaijan.
