Former Georgian Consul General to Turkey Teimuraz Sharashenidze may be appointed as the new ambassador to Azerbaijan, Georgian Deputy Foreign Minister Nino Kalandadze said at a press briefing today.

Parliament earlier refused to approve the candidacy of Deputy Foreign Relations Committee head Irakli Kavtaradze as the new ambassador given his important role in the legislative body, Kalandadze said.

"The new ambassador has extensive diplomatic experience and his appointment can only be welcomed," she said.

Parliament will consider his nomination at a meeting today.

The ministry has already presented the list of ambassadorial nominations to the Presidential Administration, which, in turn, approved and passed the list to parliament, Kalandadze said.

Previous Ambassador to Azerbaijan Nikoloz Nadbiladze left office in November 2009.

Over the past year, parliament approved two nominees for the post -- Vano Noniashvili and Irakli Kavtaradze -- but neither took office.

Otar Berdzenishvili, who served as the director of the ministry's United States Department, will be appointed as the ambassador to Brazil. Malkhaz Mikeladze, who was a member of the Foreign Ministry and served as the ambassador to Washington, will made the ambassador to Mexico.

Kote Kavtaradze will be appointed as the ambassador to Sweden. He previously led the diplomatic mission in Poland.

Nikoloz Nikolozishvili, who is part of the diplomatic mission to Slovakia, will replace Kavtaradze. Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Nalbandov will be appointed as the ambassador to Slovakia.

Mamuka Zhgenti will replace Zurab Chiaberashvili in the Council of Europe and Chiaberashvili will be appointed as the ambassador to Switzerland.

Secretary of the Constitutional Committee Tengiz Sharmanashvili will be made the ambassador to Armenia, with Goga Gorgiladze heading to Portugal and Archil Dzuliashvili going to Egypt.

"We have already presented the list of diplomats to the president, and the administration has forwarded the list to parliament with its consent," Kalandadze noted.
