Turkish Prosecutor’s Office demanded to sentence former chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Ilker Basbug to life imprisonment, Anadolu Agency reported on Tuesday.

Turkish Prosecutor's Office demanded to sentence former chief of the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces Ilker Basbug to life imprisonment, Anadolu Agency reported on Tuesday.

Basbug is accused of involvement in organizing campaign to discredit the ruling Justice and Development Party.

Besides him, 63 persons accused in the coup case face life imprisonment. The accused persons also include MPs from the opposition Republican National Party Mehmet Haberal and Mustafa Balbay.

On Jan.6, 2012, Basbug was arrested in the courtroom, where he was summoned to testify.

General Basbug resigned in 2010. He is accused in the case of the so-called "Ergenekon" group, suspected of anti-government conspiracy.
