Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili and Afghanistan's Deputy Foreign Minister Ershad Ahmadi held a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday.

During the meeting the two sides discussed issues of mutual interest, the IRIB News Agency reported.

Jalili praised Kabul's progress in stability and democracy while stressing that the two neighbouring countries should boost bilateral trade in different fields.

He went on to say that the United States of America's policies show that Washington is not in favour of unity and progress in the Islamic world.

"Supporting terrorism and opposing democracy have been the basic pillars of US policies in the region," he said.

Ahmadi in turn, thanked Tehran for its constant support for Afghanistan throughout the years.

He went on to note that the June 14 presidential election was a great victory for the country and Iranian nation.

Ahmadi also expressed the hope that the two countries' ties especially in the economic sector would increase after the withdrawal of western powers from the region.
