At present, the Azerbaijani army can not only free Nagorno-Karabakh, but also restore the country's borders, chairman of the "Azerbaijani Community of Nagorno-Karabakh" Bayram Safarov said today during a ceremony at the Alley of Honor in Baku in connection the 20th anniversary of the occupation of Agdam region by Armenian armed forces.

"At present, Azerbaijan's army radically differs from the one that existed 20 years ago," he stressed. "Azerbaijan had no standing army during that period. But today we have an army that is able to free the occupied territories."

Safarov expressed confidence that the occupied regions of Azerbaijan will be liberated soon. In his speech, he talked about state care for refugees and internally displaced persons.

"Azerbaijan is developing," Azerbaijani MP Bakhtiyar Aliyev said at the commemoration ceremony. "There is not a single refugee camp in the country today."

"Azerbaijan has become a guarantor of Europe's energy security under the leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the worthy successor of national leader Heydar Aliyev's political quest," he added.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Armenian armed forces have occupied 20 per cent of Azerbaijan since 1992, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

Azerbaijan and Armenia signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the U.S. are currently holding peace negotiations.
Armenia has not yet implemented the U.N. Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
