Some radical groups tried to take advantage of protests against the felling of trees in Istanbul to implement their plans on creating chaos in Turkey, President Abdullah Gul,who is on official visit to Washington, told journalists on Tuesday, Hurriyet newspaper reported.

According to him, Istanbul police acted against them in the same way as the security forces of New York or another city tasked to stabilize the situation would act.

He stressed that in Turkey, representatives of radical groups periodically attempt to hold protests, but they are suppressed by police.

Protests had been taking place in Turkey for nearly three weeks since the end of May 2013. According to the authorities they were anti-government.

The Turkish oppositional parties accuse the police of using excessive force against protestors.

In total, around 2.5 million people from 79 Turkish provinces participated in protest actions during three weeks, the Turkish Interior Ministry said earlier.

As a result of the unrest in Turkey nearly 4000 people were injured with varying severity, 4,900 were detained by the police.
