Azerbaijan, Baku, Sept. 30 / Trend, M. Aliyev /

It is necessary to pass a new law on the protection of the honour and dignity of the country's president in Azerbaijan, the first vice-speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Ziyafat Asgarov said at the first meeting of the autumn session today.

"According to the presidential candidates' statements, one can see that some of them go to the elections on the principle of 1992," he said. "They are criticizing and insulting the president. Can we protect him? There is article 106 of the Constitution, in which we can make changes and pass a new law."

According to him, the penalties for insulting the honor and dignity of citizens were toughened at the spring parliamentary session.

The electoral debates reveal the essence of each candidate, he said. "The Azerbaijani President does not need propaganda. His benefit to the country is self evident.

"As for the individuals insulting him, they cannot hide their issues," he said. Therefore, we must all take an active part in the elections and prove once again that Azerbaijani citizens are making the right decision."

The presidential election in Azerbaijan will be held on October 9.

The previous presidential election was held on October 15, 2008.

The presidential election in Azerbaijan is held every five years.
