Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has met 9th President of Turkey Suleyman Demirel.

"I cordially welcome you. I wholeheartedly congratulate you as you celebrate your birthday. I am very happy that you are marking this day in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijan is your motherland. You are beloved in Azerbaijan. Together with your brother, President Heydar Aliyev, you had done much for development of Turkey-Azerbaijan relations. I can say that it were you that laid the foundations of Turkey-Azerbaijan relations. And these relations are today developing on this solid foundation. Together with President Heydar Aliyev you elevated Turkey-Azerbaijan relations to the highest level," President Ilham Aliyev said.

"I remember very well that you were with our people at the most difficult times Azerbaijan had experienced. It were you and Heydar Aliyev that inaugurated Umid bridge between Turkey and Nakhchivan. The people of Azerbaijan keep this in their hearts as unforgettable and beautiful moments. You then made tremendous efforts, together with Heydar Aliyev, in construction of the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline. This pipeline today ensures the existence of a large corridor.

Dear Mr. President, once again I would like to cordially welcome you to Azerbaijan. I want to reiterate that I am very happy that you are celebrating your birthday in Azerbaijan, and that we are celebrating it together. For your outstanding contribution to developing Turkey-Azerbaijan relations, you are honored with the highest award of Azerbaijan - Sharaf Order."

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev handed the Order to Suleyman Demirel.

9th President of Turkey Suleyman Demirel thanked the Azerbaijani President for his congratulations and the award.
