Ambassador: Iran still not allowing truck movement at two checkpoints with Azerbaijan

Baku, Azerbaijan, Nov. 13

By Temkin Jafarov - Trend: The movement of citizens from the Iranian or Azerbaijani side at the Iranian-Azerbaijani border checkpoint at Bilasuvar can be carried out by bus or on foot. Nevertheless, the movement of cars and trucks at Bilasuvar or Julfa border checkpoints is not still allowed, Iranian ambassador to Azerbaijan Mohsin Pakayin told Trend on Nov.13.

The ambassador also mentioned that the movement of buses has also been prohibited at Julfa border checkpoint.

According to Pakayin, last night some 175 trucks were allowed to enter the territory of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic through the Julfa border checkpoint.

Answering the question about when the movement of cars and trucks through Bilasuvar and Julfa border checkpoints will be allowed, the diplomat said the exact date is as yet unknown .

Two individuals from Iran dressed in military uniform shot at a tractor which was conducting bank protection operations at the River Araz on November 5 at 18:15.

The border guards heard the shooting and arrived at the scene. It was revealed during the preliminary investigation that two 7.62 mm bullets were in the radiator, one lodged in the lateral side of the tractor. The location of the tractor and direction of the shots prove that fire opened up from Iran. Iranian officials said that after the incident, Azerbaijan closed the Shahtakhti - Poldesht border checkpoint. In response whilst Iran closed the border checkpoints at Julfa and Bilasuvar on November 7.

Azerbaijani and Iranian border guards recently held a meeting to try and resolve the problems at the border checkpoints between the two countries.
