Three Turkish ministers, mentioned in corruption scandal, resign (UPDATE 2)

Turkish Minister of Economy, Zafer Caglayan, Interior Minister Muammer Guler and Minister of Environment and Urban Planning Erdogan Bayraktar, who were mentioned in the corruption scandal in this country, have resigned from their posts today.

Earlier today Turkish TV channel TRT Haber reported that Economy Minister, Zafer Caglayan and Interior Minister Muammer Guler resigned.

Zafer Caglayan, while commenting on his resignation, said he made this decision for details of the corruption scandal to be clarified, according to the TV channel.

Minister of Environment and Urban Planning, Erdogan Bayraktar also stated that he resigned from the posts of both minister and MP, Hurriyet newspaper reported on Dec. 25.

According to the Turkish law, a minister's immunity has to be removed in order to bring him to justice.

Earlier it was reported that the Turkish court addressed the country's parliament with such an inquiry with regard to the persons involved in the corruption scandal.

The name of the Minister for European Union Affairs, Egemen Bagis was also mentioned in the scandal.

Turkish police conducted special operations in Istanbul and Ankara on Dec.17, resulting in the arrest of 52 people that includes businessmen and sons of some ministers.

The businessmen are accused of corruption, smuggling and selling drugs.

Among those detained were the sons of some ministers, who are the members of Turkey's ruling party - Economy Minister Zafer Caglayan's son, Salih Kaan Caglayan and Interior Minister Muammar Guler's son Baris Guler, Minister for Urban Development and Environment Erdogan Bayraktar's son Oguz Bayraktar. All three were detained on suspicion of corruption.

Mayor of Istanbul's Fatih Municipality, Mustafa Demir, director general of Turkish Halkbank Suleyman Aslan and famous entrepreneur Ali Agaoglu were arrested during the same operation by police. Searches were conducted at Halkbank's office.

Mustafa Demir and Ali Agaoglu were released on Dec.21.
