The settlement of the Syrian and Palestinian crises is only possible through political negotiations, and Azerbaijan's position on this issue lies exactly in this, speaker of Azerbaijani Milli Majlis (parliament) Ogtay Asadov said on Feb. 18, Iranian Iribnews TV channel's news website reported.

The speaker made the remarks on Feb. 18, in his speech at the 9th meeting of Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU), according to the report.

Asadov said the settlement decision, adopted by the IIPU, can play a decisive role in resolving the Syrian crisis.

The speaker noted that Azerbaijan has a strong position in the area of security provision for Muslim countries.

"We believe that Islam is a symbol of brotherhood and solidarity of Islamic states, and we have to use this potential to resolve existing problems," the speaker said.

He noted that diplomacy plays an influential role in international affairs.

"We believe that the establishment of peace and stability, the development of inter-parliamentary relations play an indispensable role," Asadov said.

He stressed that the Azerbaijani government attaches great importance to development of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and its Inter-Parliamentary Union.

The speaker, referring to Armenia's aggression against Azerbaijan, noted that in 2008 the OIC played an influential role in supporting Azerbaijan's position. With the support by the Islamic states, the UN adopted a resolution on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

"The Karabakh problem threatens the safety of both the region and other countries in the world," Asadov said.

He went on to express his gratitude to the OIC for its support to Azerbaijan's position.

Tehran hosts the 9th meeting of the IIPU at the level of parliament heads. The meeting is attended by representatives of 47 countries. The 9th IIPU meeting in Tehran will complete its work on February 19.

Azerbaijan is represented at the meeting by the speaker of Milli Majlis, Ogtay Asadov.
