Internal troops and police are on high alert after local government and legislature buildings were seized by armed men in Crimea, Acting Interior Minister Arsen Avakov wrote in his Facebook page, RIA Novosti reported on Feb. 27.

'Armed individuals seized a building in Crimea's Verkhovna Rada in Simferopol this morning', a statement said. 'Internal troops and police are on high alert'.

"The measures were made to counter extremist actions and to prevent an armed conflict in the city centre," he wrote.

Earlier it was reported that the buildings of the Supreme Council and the Council of Ministers of Crimea are now controlled by self-defence forces of the Russian-speaking population.

Police have blocked the area.
