Opening the Swedish embassies in Baku and Yerevan will enhance the conditions for Sweden to play an active role in the region and for Sweden to continue to be a driving force in the development of EU policy towards its eastern neighborhood in Europe, the Eastern Partnership, Swedish Minister for Foreign Affairs Carl Bildt said on March 4.

On March 3, Sweden opened new permanent representations in Azerbaijan's capital city Baku and Armenia's capital city Yerevan following a decision taken by the government in June 2013.

"Sweden decided to open its embassy in Baku," according to the statement.

A delegation headed by Secretary General for Trade of the Swedish Foreign Ministry Gunnar Oom met with Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Khalaf Khalafov during the visit to Azerbaijan in 2013.
