Azerbaijan and Iran are bound by historical ties, according to Azerbaijan's ambassador to Iran, Javanshir Akhundov.

Speaking at the meeting with Iranian Ardabil Province's Head Majid Khodabakhsh, the ambassador stressed that a new page was opened in the development of relations between the two countries, Iranian IRNA news agency said on Monday.

Akhundov said Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev's visit to Iran created a foundation for developing economic ties between the two countries, and showed a good potential for further expansion of cooperation in various areas.

The ambassador went on to say there is a potential for making investments in the mining, industry and tourism.

"We will encourage the Azerbaijani investors to put money in Ardabil," Akhundov stressed.

He underscored the importance of merging the Azerbaijani and Iranian railways, which will result in expansion of economic ties between the two countries.

During the meeting Khodabakhsh said that Azerbaijani businessmen have the opportunities to invest in all areas of the province.

He added that the Iranian government is interested in investments by private companies and foreign investors, and is granting them with benefits.

Khodabakhsh also invited the Azerbaijani investors to take part in economic projects in Ardabil.
