Taksim Square in Turkey`s city of Istanbul is not a place for rallies, Turkish Interior Minister Efkan Ala said.

Taksim Square will not hold a May Day march, the Turkish Anadolu news agency quotes the minister as saying.

"Taksim Square is not suitable for any marches, therefore a May Day march should not take place here, but in any other place," Ala said.

The minister said that it is necessary to take into account many factors including the safety of citizens while holding public events.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said earlier that Taksim Square is not suitable for holding the May Day march.

"One should forget about holding marches on Taksim Square," the prime minister said.
Erdogan went on to add that Turkey's government doesn't want the situation to become tense in the country during the May Day march.

Earlier, Turkey's leading oppositional Republican People's Party (CHP) earlier said the party's supporters will gather on May Day on Taksim Square in Istanbul, despite prohibitions.
