The joint working group consisting of representatives of civil society and authorities of Azerbaijan has resumed its activities in the country.

The group functioned in 2005-2008.

Head of the Department on Work with Law-Enforcement Bodies of Azerbaijan's Presidential Administration, Fuad Alasgarov and MP Samad Seyidov have been elected the co-chairs of the joint group.

The decision on resuming the activity of the group was adopted during a meeting held with participation of human rights activists, MPs and other officials on Oct.22.

During the meeting, there was also adopted a decision to create the secretariat of the joint group. Saadat Benenyarli and Sahib Mammadov have been elected members of the secretariat.

The group resumed its activity at the initiative of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland.

The group consists of Azerbaijani MPs, principal staff of the Presidential Administration, well-known human rights activists, including the representatives of international NGOs in Azerbaijan, which have consultative status in the UN structures.

Citing the memorandum on establishing the group, signed in 2005, the members of the joint group confirmed the intention of Azerbaijani society to effectively resolve the human rights issues through a dialogue with the civil society.

The name of the group has been changed to the Joint Group on Human Rights.
