Baku, Azerbaijan, Feb.16

By Seba Aghayeva - Trend:

Azerbaijan strongly condemns the brutal murder of 21 Egyptian citizens by the terrorists and expresses deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the whole Egyptian people, said a statement from Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hikmet Hajiyev on Feb.16.

Hajiyev said that Azerbaijan, as a country suffering from terrorism, shares the pain of the Egyptian people, strongly condemns all forms and manifestations of terrorism, and supports the efforts of the international community in combating terrorism.

It became known on Feb.15 that a group of armed persons kidnapped the workers of a fishing syndicate in Egypt's Kafr el-Sheikh city. The company management urged the country's authorities to give a start to the operative search for the missing. On the same day, a video footage showing how the kidnapped fishermen were killed by the militants of the 'Islamic State' terrorist group was released.

The 'Islamic State' (IS, formerly ISIL or ISIS) penetrated Syria's territory in 2013. The organization said at the time it refuses to take the oath of Al-Qaeda and declared 'a holy war' against all groups and government forces of Syria.

Strengthening of the IS in Syria allowed it to return to Iraq, deploying military actions against government forces there.

In late June of 2014, the IS announced about the creation of the 'Islamic Caliphate' on the territories under its control in Iraq and Syria. In turn, Iraqi authorities asked the international community for help in fighting the IS.
