Azerbaijani capital of Baku hosted on March 19 the nationwide festivities on the occasion of Novruz, the national holiday of the Azerbaijani people.

The celebrations were attended by Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev, his spouse Mehriban Aliyeva and family members.

The head of state, his wife and family members first arrived at the square in front of the Maiden's Tower. Children, dressed in national costumes, greeted President Ilham Aliyev and Mehriban Aliyeva on Novruz holiday.

Warriors carrying swords and shields reminiscent of Azerbaijan's ancient history stood on the fortress walls of the Old City and in the square.

Dede Gorgud gave his blessing and wishing the Novruz holiday to bring abundance to the Azerbaijani people. Children in national costumes performed dances on the square.

Art masters sang songs glorifying the spring and Azerbaijan, which created good mood in the participants of the nationwide festivities.

President Ilham Aliyev lit the Novruz bonfire, and then made a speech.

Afterwards, the president and his family members visited the National Seaside Park.

The president and his spouse were met there by the key characters of Novruz - Kosa and Kechal. Kosa and Kechal congratulated President Ilham Aliyev and his family members on the Novruz holiday.

The stands reflecting the country's sports achievements, national and spiritual values added a special touch to the festivities.

As part of the festivities, the head of state and his family members got acquainted with the exhibition of products grown on fertile Azerbaijani lands. Moreover, Novruz dishes brought from different regions caused interest among the participants of the festivities.

The ancient folk art inherited from the ancestors was demonstrated and various sweets - the symbols of the Novruz holiday - were presented during the festivities.

During the festivities, President Ilham Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva watched the performances of the athletes in front on the stands dedicated to the First European Games to be held in June 2015 in Baku.
