Telam National News Agency of Argentina has apologized to Azerbaijan for a pro-Armenian article about Nagorno-Karabakh posted on the agency's website, as well as for the agency journalist's illegal visit to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani foreign ministry said April 7.

Earlier, the Armenian side organized the visit for a number of participants of the international media forum in Armenia (March 18-23) to the occupied territories of Azerbaijan.

Telam agency journalist Maria Laura Carpineti was among those paying an illegal visit to the occupied territories. Later she posted an article on the agency's website, reflecting a pro-Armenian position on the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict.

"After posting the article on the agency's website, the embassy of Azerbaijan in Argentina appealed to the Telam management," the statement said. "The embassy expressed its dissatisfaction with the article and the agency journalist's illegal visit to the Nagorno-Karabakh. According to the Azerbaijani legislation, the journalist's name will be added to the list of undesirable persons of the Azerbaijani foreign ministry."

After this appeal, the agency's management removed the article from the website and sent an apology letter to the embassy.

"There are some errors and inaccuracy in the article of the Telam agency and the article was removed from the website of the agency," the letter said.

In its letter, the agency's management promised to be more careful and to avoid recurrence of such incidents in the future.

The agency's management also expressed respect for the territorial integrity, sovereignty and internationally recognized borders of Azerbaijan.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations. Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on the liberation of the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding regions.
